Albuquerque Event Photographer | Gasit Dulce Race

Earlier this month Dylan and I went to Dulce NM for another Gasit race. Dulce is located in northern New Mexico, and has an interesting history. According to Wikipedia, “Dulce was founded by the Gomez family as a ranching operation. The original name was “Agua Dulce,” Spanish for “sweet water,” because of the presence of natural springs that provided good drinking water for the people and their animals. The original homestead was founded in 1877 by Jose Eugenio Gomez. The Jicarilla Apache reservation was established in 1887 when the Apache people were forced into a reservation. The Gomez Ranch is currently kept under Manuel Gomez ownership, though surrounded by reservation land.”

This race was beautifully situated with three river crossings and lots of super technical trail. Saturday was the pre-ride, mini races and barrel racing events. Though traditionally done on horseback, the barrel races were done with bikes. It was a neat addition to the weekend. It was timed by class, and only $10 to enter the barrel races, winner takes all.

The main course consisted of two fifty mile loops, which were very well marked. The organizers of the event had a difficult time making the course due to the wildlife in the area removing and eating the markers. Each rider has the option to do a pre-ride. Unfortunately, on his pre-ride, Dylan popped his tire, and was unable to finish. During the actual race on Sunday, Dylan popped the same tire at the same spot on the course. So, he never saw the full course. When that happened he came and stood by me at one of the river crossings, and helped other riders through.

We stayed at the Wild Horse Casino and Hotel. While it is the only place to stay at in Dulce, it was really nice. The room was large, and the king bed comfortable.
